The Ganga Hospital Open Injury Score (GHOISS) was conceived at Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India in 1996 and developed into its current form following three clinical trials.

Ganga Hospital is a tertiary centre of excellence for trauma and orthopaedics and plastic surgery. It treats around 600 open injuries annually and boasts some of the world’s most renowned consultant surgeons. This experience led to the development of the scoring system in order to provide guidance to colleagues around the world who may not have extensive experience in treating these injuries.
